Hsp27 (HspB1) belongs to the α-crystallin–related small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) family. These include proteins with monomeric molecular weight ranging from 16 to 28 kDa and are encoded by a multigene family of 10 genes, (Table 2)13. Functional genes encoding Hsp27 proteins are located on the chromosomal locus 7p12.3f and there are 2 identified pseudogenes named Xp11.23 and 9q13–9q2115. Mammalian Hsp27 has a molecular weight of 27 kDa while it can form oligomeric complexes in the range 100 to 800 kDa35.
